The Employment Rights Bill receives Royal Ascent
Written in
As of the 18th December 2025, the Employment Rights Bill has received Royal Ascent and is now named the ‘Employment Rights Act 2025’. Receiving Royal Ascent is the final phase before a Bill becomes the law after being approved by House of Lords, House of Commons and the King.
The Employment Rights Act aims to support employers, workers and unions and is the first phase of the Governments plan set out in the Plan to Make Work Pay. The longer-term plan is to aid growing the economy, raising living standards across the UK and to create opportunities for all. This should bring employment rights up to date for the 21st Century.
This new law will be implemented in phases over 2026 and 2027. The majority of the changes will take effect in April 2026, referred to as ‘phase 2’, including changes to Statutory Sick Pay, Family Leave, Fair Work Agency, Trade Unions, Redundancy, and Sexual Harassment.
